You have an exciting film called Adulthood that’s premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival next month! Tell us what the film is about and your character in it.
Adulthood is a dark comedy about a brother and sister (Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario) who uncover a very dark secret about their parents’ past. From there, they spiral into one bad judgment call after another, each one making their situation much, much worse. I play Diego, Kaya’s husband — a smart, level-headed man trying to navigate some marital issues, completely unaware that his wife is knee-deep in some very illegal activity. Playing him was a fascinating challenge. The absurdity of his obliviousness makes for some hilarious moments.
Do you have a favorite scene you filmed?
One of my favorites is the family dinner scene. Diego is quietly trying to figure out what’s going on while his wife, brother-in-law, and distant cousin are speaking in code about a crime they’re all committing. It was a blast to shoot, especially working so closely with Josh, Kaya, and Anthony Carrigan.
What was it like working with such a talented and funny cast?
Whoever said, “Don’t meet your heroes,” clearly hasn’t met Josh Gad! The whole cast was incredible. Kaya was an amazing scene partner, and Anthony and Josh brought so much to every moment. The experience felt like a masterclass in trusting your instincts as an actor. It was inspiring to be around such natural, effortless talent.
Let’s talk about working with the film’s director, Alex Winter, which many people know him as the actor from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. In the director’s seat, was he more serious than you expected, or did he keep the set and his directing style light and laid-back?
I can’t say enough good things about working with Alex. He struck the perfect balance between serious and laid-back. He’s incredibly smart, knew exactly what he wanted, and came to set knowing his film inside and out. That confidence gave him the flexibility to adapt when needed. Watching him draw the very best out of his cast and crew — and make it look easy — was really impressive.
TIFF is a huge deal, but I imagine with you being a Canadian actor, it’s an even bigger deal. Are you going to be attending the festival for the premiere?
Absolutely. I’m so proud of this film, and I would have flown to the other side of the world for its premiere. Having it happen right in my backyard is a gift. It doesn’t get bigger than TIFF.

Outside of acting, you’re also a musician and work in sound in the film industry as well. Did music or acting call to you first?
It all started with music for me, and it’s still a huge part of my life. I’m currently working on new music I’m really excited about, and I’ve had the privilege to score and sound-design a handful of upcoming films. Seeing the entertainment industry from so many different angles is a real gift — each facet of my work feeds into and enriches the others.
What upcoming projects are you able to share with us?
On the acting side, I’ll be starting Watch Me, directed by Jonathan Sharp, which shoots in Europe next year. Musically, I just finished scoring a beautiful film called Surfacing, starring Damian Romeo and Cindy Sampson. On the audio side, I’m currently doing sound post-production for The Christmas Witch Trial of La Befana, starring Angelica and Danny Huston. It’s been a busy few months!
Getting back to Adulthood, can you give us an elevator pitch for the film and tell us how and when we can see it?
It’s been described as a razor-sharp neo-noir dark comedy about grown-up siblings forced to cover their tracks after a grisly discovery — unfolding with biting humor, buried family secrets, and plenty of moral ambiguity. The film premieres at this year’s TIFF, followed by a theatrical run in select theaters starting September 19, and then it will be available to stream on Paramount+ from September 23.

What would you like to say to all of your fans and future fans out there?
I’m not sure how I feel about the word “fans” in this day and age. As artists, our relationship with our audience is always evolving — it’s about creating something meaningful. Whether it’s pure escapism or something that resonates more deeply, I’ll always work hard to hold up my end of the deal: doing work that excites me and that I’m proud of. Plenty more to come!
