Pop-fantasy artist Maisy Kay is stepping into a bold new era with her upcoming single, “Vantablack”. Known for her ethereal soundscapes, whimsical storytelling, and emotionally rich lyricism, Maisy continues to blur the line between dream and reality in her music.
StarShine caught up with Maisy to talk about her latest release, creative process, and her upcoming tour with Lauren Spencer Smith.
Tell us about your new single, “Vantablack”!
Vantablack is a shade of black that’s so dark it appears like a black hole. I had been through a bad breakup, but I was burnt out on sad songs and wanted to try something more upbeat.
We had the fun idea to talk about the heart being covered in Vantablack paint, and we wrote the rest of the song so fast! We were in a studio that had dogs AND cat visitors, so needless to say, I had a blast!

For someone who has never heard your music before, how would you describe it?
I’ve been calling it whimsical pop or ethereal pop. I love fantasy and when things feel a little dream-like. I also pay heavy attention to lyricism and try to tell a story in every song.
I love the visual lyrics you write! What inspires your lyrics and the vibe of your music?
Lately, I’ve found that writing about my own personal experiences comes easiest to me because there’s no inauthenticity. I feel very deeply, which can be both a blessing and a heavy curse, so I find translating it into a song or a story to be very therapeutic. When I write alone, I don’t often know what type of song I’m making until I’ve almost finished it!
What can fans expect from your upcoming tour with Lauren Spencer Smith?
There’s lots to expect on this tour. We are debuting 2 new outfits, 3 new songs, and one of them is a brand new cover song, and it’s a song that I’ve always wanted to perform, but I never quite had the courage to so I’m so excited for people to see it.
Do you have a favorite city or venue you love to perform in?
I have two favorite cities. Atlanta is my favorite for best crowd because on both U.S. tours I’ve done, Atlanta has been the best crowd both times, which is very impressive. But then in terms of exploring, I really love Seattle.

Out of all your songs, is there a certain one that hits different live that really engages the crowd?
I think “Love Is A God” is usually a great moment to connect with the crowd. Fans have started learning the dance and doing it alongside me, and I think people who are new to me get super excited when I hit the high notes at the end, which is a wonderful feeling.
Anything else you have coming up that you want to plug?
Let’s just say “Vantablack” won’t be the last release from me, and I hope my fans keep their eyes and ears open!
What is something you would like to say to your fans and future fans reading this?
To the fans, I’d just like to say thank you so, so much for your continued belief and support. I never could have imagined that so many people would listen to and enjoy my music and getting to share those moments with you and connect through music is one of the greatest joys of being alive so thank you for giving that gift to me every day. Love you guys!
